N1MM versus FLDIGI/MMVARI/MMTTY in the SCC RTTY Championship

This is what I was looking for...
Last week my SARTG RTTY contestlog was corrupted unfortenately. Half of the received exchange numbers were lost. So, though DM780 is still the Rolls Royce of the digital mode softwares for me, it is not capable of error free contesting. This log became worthless and I will not send it in. Back to the free contestlogger N1MM then. I only tested RTTY with MMVARI actually. The problem with MMVARI/MMTTY though is that they have no audio history capability like DM780. The advantage of that is you can quickly see what stations are on a part of the frequency in the waterfall bandwith. Of course there are other possebilities like the superbrowser in DM780 but it is just what you're used to. However DM780 uses the FLDIGI core and N1MM can use FLDIGI too, so it was just a matter of searching the configuration. I finally found it and a small test with the standalone FLDIGI made me happy. Now, I configured N1MM with all 3 programs and discovered some of the advantages and disadvantages.

N1MM with FLDIGI: Lots of configuration possebilities, the big advantage is the clear waterfall and of course the audio memory or history. Different digital modes are almost countless. When testing I discovered a disadvantage, FLDIGI decodes and responds slow compared to MMVARI/MMTTY. The audio history doesn't decode always or too slow. RX/TX switching seems to have a few ms delay, and I did not discover a solution for that in the configuration. Filtering options are minimal and restarting N1MM gives only minimal improvement. FLDIGI receives well and I could not see any difference compared to other software. I think it's a great program for S&P especially when you work with it on remote via internet. I like this program most when the band is quiet.

N1MM with MMVARI: Worked a lot with this software in several contests but miss the audio history and that is the main disadvantage. Advantage is that it is fast and has a lot of filters though I have questionmarks for the use of that kind of filtering. It also has a large clear waterfall like FLDIGI. You can choose a multichannel (4) configuration to see 4 traces at the same time but it is nothing compared to the DM780 superbrowser. I like the possebility of RTTY-USB and RTTY-LSB. I think it is a great program for S&P and running also on remote via internet.

N1MM with MMTTY: First time in this contest that I used this software. 2 main disadvantages are  no audio history and no clear waterfall. Adavantage is the fast response and fast automatic tune on the signal and great push the button filtering. I think this is the program to use when you have the radio besides the computer and you like to dail the tuneknob. If you used to do RTTY on USB don't forget to click the reverse button otherwise you will not decode anything and they won't hear you. And yes, I know that the N1MM manual told me to use LSB in AFSK mode, but I'm used to DM780 were all digmodes are used in USB. MMTTY is the program to work with when you are in the shack with the radio. But it is useless for remote via internet.

Finally I made only 53 QSO in the SCC RTTY championship because I was testing all kind of configuration possebilities of all 3 programs. Nice thing is that I can now switch very fast between 3 different RTTY programs in N1MM. It could be a advantage.

N1MM with FLDIGI
N1MM with MMVARI

N1MM with MMTTY

Lighthouse hunting / SARTG RTTY Contest

Well, not really hunting lighthouses. Though I have worked some of them. No DX but I really wanted to work some of the "neighbour" lighthouses and I did. Here a small list: DL0RWE Old lighthouse Borkum Isl. DE0046 (is a call of the RWE energy company which is building a huge powerstation in my neighbourhood at the moment), 8S6IL SE477, ON4OS/LH Nieuwpoort BE0007, ON4CCC/LH BE0005/0006, DL0SY/P Sylt Isl. Kampen lighthouse DE0124, DL0PBS/LH Juist Isl. DE0121 and today on 30m RTTY GB1OL Noup head, Orkney Isl. UK0105. The small islands Borkum, Juist and Sylt are relative easy to work for me as there is almost only water between us. Besides the lighthouses hunt I also participated in the SARTG RTTY contest. Actually I wanted to stop at 25 but made 104 QSOs in the end. I started with D4C and end with my neighbourstation PA0O. Actually it was a lot of fun working remote from my living room the entire contest. Very good propagation with the USA at times working them was easier then work a station in Spain for example.

Antipodes map

As a radioamateur I've got something with geography. When you work a lot of DX and you look at the worldmap were the country that you just spoke is located you develop a certain geographic feeling. With this ability you're able to locate a country on the map much faster as someone who isn't DXing. Sometimes you even know about countries no one else has heard of and you can point them exactly on the worldmap. I found a interesting map on the internet were you can find your antipodes. Here in the Netherlands you're always told that when you dig deep enough you find yourself in New Zealand at the end. If you take a look at the map it shows that it is not exact but not to far away. A few miles or so..... ;-)

10000th QSO at PE4BAS remote in TARA grid dip contest

I took part in the TARA grid dip RTTY PSK contest yesterday. In this contest I logged my 10000th QSO since I am a HAM operator. G0HDV on 20m RTTY had the honour to be the 10000th contact. Because I have to look after Anneli once and a while I could not sit in the shack and so I had to operate on remote. It went well now our internet speed has improved from 3 Mbps to 8 Mbps I have almost no delay anymore. After all I made only 43 QSO in this contest, not much because I didn´t have much time. Most of the participants took part with RTTY, I only logged 3 in PSK. Probabely RTTY is more populair as contest mode. This morning I did read on the DXcluster there was sporadic-E, I still had the radio on remote and quickly made a QSO on 10m. Later on the day I didn´t hear anything on 10m or 6m anymore.

PACC token received, watch out for Aurora

I received the famous PACC contest token of merit today. I think this is the best design till now with the dutch colours red/white/blue and orange tulips. With pride I will put it on the shack wall near the other PACC tokens. Included there was also a letter from the PACC organisation with a new rule for the next PACC. We are allowed to work the same station 1x on CW and 1x on SSB on the same band in mixed mode.

Well, I did read some sites about Aurora last night around 17:30 UTC, some people did see it in Germany. But unfortenately nothing was seen in the sky here, nothing at the radio as well. But around that time I had a sporadic-e path to the Balearic Isl. and spoke EA6TT and EA6DD with 5/9, they were the only ones on the band in phone as far as I could hear in phone. It was DXCC nr. 40 for me on 6m. Following some sites on the internet tonight could be even stronger chances for Aurora. So I will watch out and listen.

I found these interesting sites/ Ik vond deze interessante sites:
Current solar data: NOAA Data
