Kingdom of the Netherlands

After more then 100 years Queens we finally have  real King today. What do ordinairy dutch people do at this day? Well of course most of the people have a day off. There are lots of activities all over the kingdom and if you like you can go there. But most important was the abdication this morning at 8 UTC. We enjoyed the pleasure of a cup of real Dutch Douwe Egberts coffee and a orange tompouce while watching the abdication on TV. We will watch all the important cermonial moments througout the day.

A visit near the sea...

My harmonic Anneli and I had the chance to visit the Sterraza radio group today. They use the call PI4ET and are transmitting from a very quiet location on the northern coast here. Just for the fun of it of course. That makes it a very relax happening which is nice to visit. I met PA3ASE Klaas, PH7B Bert and PA1AT Gerard on the site. Once a year this very small house near the dyke is rented by the radio group to spend a weekend at the radio on a noise free location....

Calling CQ on JT9-1

Lots of stations that are spotting me. Calling CQ, calling CQ with 5W and my vertical. But not many that respond? Only few that respond after responding to a CQ myself. I wonder if I do something wrong? I installed JT-Alert X this evening, it does work well and reports to HAMspots with signal reports. Very nice.

Heel mooi.

A windy afternoon

At the moment I think 24 hours a day is not enough in my life! Anyway, I had a afternoon together with my little harmonic Anneli. We decided to go to the sea. No radio involved this time. We had a nice view at some gigantic windmill parts ready to be shipped offshore and of course we got to see the sea. This is about 3-8 Km from our home. The Eemshaven is a very fast growing harbour with all kind of industrial activities  amongst them lots of windmills, 3 electricity powerplants and a google datacenter. We enjoyed our afternoon and were almost blown away by the wind.

Half hour JT9

I had the opportunity to be on air with JT9-1 for half a hour this evening. I started on 17m and made only one contact before RTTY signals wiped out the band. I moved to 20m and received a lot of stations on JT9-1, wow really, it's getting more then populair. I work with WSJT-X version 3188 now which is already over ruled by version 3195 this evening. Joe implemented at least one of the wishes I wrote at him. Nice to have the feeling that I was involved in the development of WSJT-X. I was working with 5W out of the FT817 and my horizontal loop. But despite I was heard/seen worldwide (VK3AMA is not on the map but I was spotted on HAMspots several times) I could not make a single contact on 20m. I don't know what to think of it as the signals I tried to reply to were all very strong and inside Europe. I tried to reply to at least 5 different stations but it seemed they didn't see me, or WSJT-X didn't decode me on their side. I know propagation is not always the other way around but with 5 different stations?? It couldn't be my signal as I was even seen in New Zealand and west-coast USA! This puzzles me. It could be some bad luck, coincidence of course. But actually I think it is easier to make a random QSO on PSK at the moment...

Update: Later that evening after writing this article I finally had a very difficult QSO with Portugal on 20m.

Alerting JT9

Joe K1JT wrote me an e-mail last week about the development of WSJT-X asking about features I would like to see. I wrote him I would like to see some text above the message buttons in tab 2 to clarify the difference between answering a CQ and answering a caller. Besides that I would like to CAT control WSJT-X through HRD, which is possible in JT65HF. Also some features of JT-Alert that I personally like are missing but not really Joe's task to implement. Anyway, Joe wrote me again today that  co-operation is a possebility but since Joe is not using HRD it will be not a high priority. The good news is that Joe is working with Laurie VK3AMA to make JT-Alert working with WSJT-X. It is in the latest stage of testing and will be available soon!

JT9 on LoTW

Like many others I'm an occasional LoTW uploader. I upload my logbook 2 or 3 times a year. Now, the last time I upload to LoTW the JT9 mode was not implemented yet. And now all 3 QSOs I made were not accepted. Searching the internet for a solution did soon reveal that there is a new configuration file for TQSL that add the JT9 mode to the list of recognized modes. It can be downloaded from your LoTW account. But where to find the file? Well here a step for step solution:

1. Log into your LoTW account

2. Click on YOUR ACCOUNT

3. Click on Your Certificates

4. Click on Download current TQSL configuration file

The file you download is named config.tq6. Just click it and it will install itself. Since I work with HRD V4 as logbook export to ADIF will not have the good output for the JT9 mode. I edit the ADIF file myself in notepad and noticed after a few errors that only JT9-1 will get your file converted to tq8 for uploading without errors.

I made some fast JT9-1 QSOs and one JT65A QSO today to compare software.
I have to write that the newest WSJT-X is getting very comfortable. Unfortunately my 19" monitor went dead this afternoon. I hooked up an old 15" and so the picture shows my complete screen. 10 years ago a 15" monitor was about standard!

1. Log in op je LoTW account

2. Klik op YOUR ACCOUNT

3. Klik op Your certificates

After the fire

Well, I'm shure you all remember the disaster last year at my job posted here: http://pe4bas.blogspot.nl/2012/04/fire.html

I'm happy to tell you all that the shop has been rebuilt and opened today, exactly 1 year after the big fire. I don't know how I managed to get regulary posts in this blog and still had time for a contest and my family. I made 50+ hours last couple of weeks every week together with my colleagues to have everything ready. I'm glad everything is in business again now.

Sjoelen

So, what do you do at easter sunday when not visiting family! We are not visiting any church and actually don't have much with religion anyway. Easter for us means nice and cosy at home with the family or visiting our parents. Now, we didn't have any appointments at sunday and thought we could learn our little daughter Anneli how to do "Sjoelen". This is a typical dutch sport and there is no good english translation for it. It could be called shuffleboard, but that game looks more like curling to me. Anyway for those not familiar with it. You got a board of about 2 mtr long and at the end there are 4 chambers with slots in it. The player has 30 round wooden stones that you need to slide through the slots in the chambers. You can earn 1, 2, 3 or 4 points depending in which chamber you slide the stone. If you got a stone in every chamber the points are doubled (20 points). You can play 3 times and when you are really good and slide all those stones at the first play into the chambers you can play one bonus stone again, if you manage to slide that stone in a chamber again you can try it again and earn a maximum score of 156 points. I can tell you that is not easy, I managed once 101 points last sunday, my XYL 105 points and Anneli 79 points. The guy in the video does a lot better, I guess he knows how to play this game! We visited my parents at easter monday and had a nice walk.

CQ WW WPX SSB 2013

Some negotiating with the station manager resulted in a radio Saturday. So most of my QSOs were made that day. I did want to be with my family myself as well at the easter days. So, only some contesting late sunday evening. I did go for as many QSOs as possible and not working DX or new DXCC. Coincidentally bumped at some great DX of course, especially 15m was in great shape surprisingly. The only station that was a new DXCC for me was RI1ANU from Bellingshausen Base on King George Island, South Shetland Islands (Antarctica). 10m was not really open at Saturday, although I heard a lot of DX, signals were at a very low level and  I did have a lot of PLC/Plasma TV QRM there unfortunately. This year it was clear to me that especially Italian stations didn't want to hear the correct progressive number no matter how many times you repeated it, I have nothing against Italian radio amateurs, but most of them have troubles with receiving or the QRM level is higher there compared to other countries. On the other hand I'm always amazed by the american super ears, really, I sometimes think it is a miracle they catch my signal immidiatly without any error.

Some of the interesting DX worked:
(Canada and USA not included but worked lots of different zones from east to west!)

10m: 9K2HN (Kuwait), YB0MWM (Indonesia)
15m: 9K2HN (Kuwait), A71AM (Quatar), UN8GV (Kazakhstan), RV9UP (As. Russia), BY4IIG (China),   8P5A(Barbados), YC1LA (Indonesia), A61QQ (UAE), 7Z1SJ/QRP (5W!) (Saudi Arabia), JA6LCJ (Japan), DU1UGZ (Philippines), 6V7S (Senegal), KP2MM (US Virgin Isl.), CV5D (Uruquay), P40Z (Aruba), PY2NY (Brazil), HK1NA (Colombia), LR3M (Argentina), CE3CT (Chile), YV5KG (Venezuela),   RI1ANU (Antarctica), BW2/JP1RIW (Taiwan)
20m: VK6NC (Australia), KP2TM (US Virgin Isl.), D4C (Cape Verde), JH4UYB (Japan), DZ1B (Philippines), BY4IIG (China), YB4IR (Indonesia), 8P5A (Barbados), P41A (Aruba), PR5B (Brazil), HK1NA (Colombia)
40m: UP0L (Kazakhstan), 9K2HN (Kuwait), RC9O (As. Russia)
80m: 4L5O (Georgia), RF9C (As. Russia), UP2L (Kazakhstan)

LOG ANALYSIS PE4BAS

80m in the WPX SSB

I will be publishing my contest review later. I made a short video tuning the 80m band 3600-3800 KHz LSB on sunday evening. Normally I have fun making long runs on 80m, but this contest it was not my best band at all. The Icom IC-706 MK2G cannot handle that much splatter. I've tried a few times to make a run, but it didn't work out as I could only hear the super strong ones. No fun that way, but we have to take it!

Stand alone S.P.A.R.

Self Powered Amateur Radio is not new. But a stand alone S.P.A.R. is, and I made one! Actually made the S.P. as I used my Yaesu FT817ND as amateur radio. The FT817 has a battery inside that can be charged, in my case with solar cells. Not the usual cells but high capacity multilayer ones using another technique called Lumeloid. Lumeloid doesn't use photovoltaic cells but very thin plastic panels that are covered with conductive polymers, long chains of molecular plastic units that conduct. As sunlight hits the chains, the energy in the light is transferred to electrons in the polymers which escape at one end in the form of electricity. I need these very high output cells as I wouldn't be able to charge the internal battery when using the radio the whole day. Luckely I had just  enough of surface on the radio to reach the output of 9,8V with a peak current of 4A to charge the FNB-85 Ni-MH accupack inside even when transmitting. Of course to reach this 4A it should be in direct sunlight. but with these special cells having 80% efficiency even dim daylight gives about 2A output which is even enough to transmit without a accupack.

If you are interested I bought the Lumeloid solar cell here.
Geïnteresseerd? Ik kocht de Lumeloid zonnepaneel hier.
